Peabody to distribute earthquake preparedness brochures

PEABODY, Massachusetts – Peabody residents who have been wondering what to do if the tremors and fluctuations of recent months ever turn out to be a larger earthquake will soon be able to turn to the city’s new earthquake preparedness handbook.

Mayor Ted Bettencourt said the Peabody earthquake brochure will soon be distributed to many neighborhoods, and will be available online and in town halls across the city.

The brochure was proposed during a public earthquake forum held at Peabody City Hall on August 25 when Boston University professor and seismologist Dr. John Ebel said the city was going through what he called an “earthquake swarm.”

He explained that an earthquake swarm occurs when a city or region with no known fault lines suddenly becomes the epicenter of dozens or hundreds of small earthquakes over a period of weeks or months. Most of the time, he said, earthquakes are hard to feel, and it’s very rare for a major earthquake to occur during one of these swarms.

“What you live here in Peabody is not an everyday occurrence,” Ebel told the forum, which drew dozens of residents and local officials to Wiggin Hall. “But this is not unusual.”

However, Bettencourt said several residents asked him that night if the city could prepare a brochure outlining steps to take to stay safe “in the unlikely event of a major earthquake.”
