Earthquake kills at least 20 people in Pakistan

At least 20 people died after the earthquake that struck Pakistan on Thursday as most of the population was asleep, according to disaster officials and local news reports.

The quake occurred just after 3 a.m. local time and had a magnitude of 5.7, according to the US Geological Survey, which said the quake was at a depth of 6.2 miles.

The epicenter, which was relatively shallow, was about 13 miles northeast of the city of Harnai in Balochistan province. It was 60 miles from Quetta, the capital of the province near the Afghan border, where a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck in 1935, killing up to 60,000 people.

Disaster officials told local reporters that at least 300 people were injured on Thursday. Officials expected the death toll to rise. Rescue officials said most of the dead were women and children.

Reuters reported that more than 100 mud houses collapsed, while others were damaged, including government buildings. Sohail Anwar, Harnai’s deputy commissioner, told Reuters hundreds of people were left homeless.

Video footage showed wounded people receiving treatment on stretchers in the street.

Pakistan is located in an area famous for high seismic activity. A 5.6-magnitude earthquake hit several cities in northern Pakistan and parts of the Kashmir-controlled region, killing at least 22 people and injuring more than 700. In 2013, a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck a remote region in western Pakistan. killing at least 80 people. A 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck parts of the southwest in 2008, leaving at least 150 people dead and hundreds injured.
