Metro has installed ShakeAlert earthquake early warning system in all bus and railway departments

Metro has partnered with Early Warning Labs in Santa Monica to install a new earthquake early warning system on all bus and rail divisions—just in time for this year’s Great ShakeOut earthquake preparedness event on Thursday, October 21.

The earthquake early warning system, called ShakeAlert, is operated by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and detects earthquakes of magnitude 4.8 or greater. The system alerts agencies to help protect people, critical systems, equipment, and infrastructure within seconds of the primary energy radiating from the epicenter, providing critical moments for preparedness. By deploying ShakeAlert at 26 metro facilities, employees can get an early warning before vibration arrives, which could help them keep fellow employees and transportation facilities safe.

The ShakeAlert Metro deployment is believed to be the nation’s largest installation of an early warning system in a transit agency. During Thursday’s Great ShakeOut, Metro will send out test alerts to all locations with the warning, “Earthquake, quake, earthquake, tremor expected,” prompting operations personnel to implement earthquake response measures to secure people and property as if it were a real earthquake.

Metro is an early adopter of the ShakeAlert earthquake early warning system. The agency partnered with the USGS as a pilot tester in 2007. In 2016, the Metro Emergency Management Division began a pilot project to install the system at the Rail Operations Center with a private partner of Early Warning Laboratories. This beta version went live in 2018. This week, the system expanded to 25 additional sites. Next, Metro is installing ShakeAlert on every bus and train on the metro system, enhancing the ability to protect passengers in the event of an earthquake.
