Early reports indicate that the eastern part of the island was hit by a strong earthquake of magnitude 6.2. The center said that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 40 km.

Footage on Twitter shows a balcony collapse on the street below as the quake was very strong.

“My balcony wall collapsed! This time it was too tall and too strong,” Story_taiwan tweeted.

“This was the first time I had experienced such a strong earthquake, and it frightened me to death!”

Others like Terrible_Spy said the earthquake was “strong”.

Michael (MWStory) tweeted: “This was the biggest earthquake I’ve ever had in Taiwan.”

“The shaking started just before the sirens sounded, so it came as a complete surprise. Everything is fine in our house.”

On Twitter, BX2ABT, who claims to live in the northern part of the island, said they only felt a 4.0-magnitude earthquake.

“The lamp is swaying, some AA batteries have been rolled off the shelf, but other than that, we’re fine.

“However, we received a presidential alert, so this system is working fine.”

Footage shared by RochexRB27 shows that the quake was strong enough to shake boxes of pasta from shelves in a grocery store.

Analysts from Volcano Discovery say the earthquake, although powerful, will not have serious consequences.

Based on the initial seismic data, the earthquake was probably felt by many people in the epicenter area.
