The US Geological Survey said a 3.9-magnitude earthquake struck the Maywood area

Maywood, California (CABC) – An initial earthquake of magnitude 3.9 struck the Maywood region Sunday morning, according to the US Geological Survey.

The USGS said the quake occurred at 7:01 a.m. with its epicenter 1.5 miles southeast of Boyle Heights and 2 miles west northwest of Commerce. Seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones said on Twitter that its depth was measured by about 10 miles, “making it close to the bottom of the seismic layer”.

“How you feel in a small earthquake like this morning depends on how close you are to it,” Jones said. “Because it’s 10 miles away, everyone is at least 10 miles away from it. The closer you get, the sharper the action.”

There were no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage.

Many Los Angeles County residents took to social media in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake.

“Although the number wasn’t high, we felt it was very difficult,” Jennifer Ann Aparicio Hernandez said on Facebook. “We heard a really loud crackle and jolt. Our windows looked like they were breaking.”

The Los Angeles Fire Department said in a statement that it has activated its “earthquake mode” protocol.

“All 106 firefighting stations will conduct a strategic survey of their areas, examining all major areas of importance (such as transportation infrastructure, places of large gatherings, apartment buildings, power lines, etc.)”, the statement said. “This survey will be conducted from land, air and water,” he added.

The agency said the process usually takes less than an hour.
