Scientists have discovered the deepest earthquake the Japanese islands have ever experienced, more than six years after the terrible earthquake that struck Ogasawara off the coast.

On May 30, 2015, a 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck 117 miles northwest of Chi Chi Jima in the Ogasawara Islands. The epicenter was about 412 miles (664 kilometers) under the western Pacific Ocean at the time of the disaster. Except for the Chichijima and Hahajima islands, the islands lie about 6,290 miles (997 kilometers) south of Tokyo and are generally deserted.

Arizona researchers detected a series of aftershocks 467 miles (751 kilometers) underground after the major earthquake that hit the region.

It was previously assumed that earthquakes could not strike this deep.

Earthquakes are frequently documented at depths ranging from zero to 435 miles, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS) (0 and 700 kilometers).

The temperatures and pressures acting on the Earth’s rocks force it to deform rather than break and fall beyond these depths.

However, the Arizona scientists seem to have discovered a new frontier in their current study, which was published in Geophysical Research Letters.

The study authors wrote: “For more than a century, scientists have debated the causes of earthquakes below 60 kilometers below the Earth’s surface.

The first earthquakes with source locations in the lower mantle were detected in this investigation.

“These findings add to our understanding of the mechanisms that cause earthquakes deep in the Earth.”

According to a National Geographic report, many scientists remain skeptical of the study’s findings.

They believe that further investigations are needed to confirm that the aftershock actually hit this depth before any clear conclusions can be drawn from the findings.

The lower mantle, also known as the middle mantle, is the liquid component of the Earth’s mantle, accounting for about 56 percent of its total volume.
