2200 aftershocks and counting after 6.5 earthquake near Tonoba

An earthquake shook about 2,200 aftershocks in Nevada last week since the largest earthquake in the state in 66 years, with a magnitude of 6.5 struck near Tonopa last Friday.

Of the 2,200 earthquakes, 237 were above 3.0, and 31 measured 4.0 or higher. The three largest crested size is 5.0.

“These are major aftershocks,” said Jane Burman, a geophysicist and project manager at the Nevada Seismology Laboratory. “Once it reaches above 5.0, it can be devastating.”

Fortunately, no one was injured in last Friday’s earthquake and its aftermath – it was officially named the Monte Cristo Earthquake after the mountain range in which it is located. The earthquake damaged highways in the provinces of Esmeralda, Mineral and Nye, leading the governor of Sisulak State on Thursday to declare a state of emergency in order to release federal funds for repairs.

The seismic sequence continues to shake the mountains of Monte Cristo in what Burman described as a “productive” aftershock sequence, which means not only produces many aftershocks, but also produces powerful aftershocks.

This is not common in Nevada, Burman said, which is the state where earthquakes have historically followed a longer-than-average period of strong aftershocks.

The U.S. Geological Survey is currently forecasting 62 percent of the possibility of more aftershocks in Band 5 next week. In the same timeframe, there is an 11 percent chance of a subsequent earthquake greater than 6.0 might strike.

In the hours and days after the Monte Cristo earthquake, a cadre of geologists and other seismologists were deployed to the area affected by the earthquake.

These scientists have put a number of temporary seismometers in order to better capture continuous vibration since the nearest permanent sensor is located about 30 or 40 miles away.

But they were also looking for physical signs of earthquakes – cracks in the ground and areas where the ground has been deformed.

These earthquake physical objects are considered “perishable data.”

These distortions and cracks in the ground are often small and fragile, and can be easily erased by wind, rain, or snowfall.

“After the earthquake, the race is always with time,” said Burman.

As the earthquake sequence near Tonopah continues to tremble, the threat of a larger earthquake looms on the horizon.

Borman said that if the Earth starts to move into Tonopah again, the best that people can do is to fall, cover and continue, because “when you start feeling this vibration, you don’t know whether it will be a small earthquake or say Borman”.
