Wooden scaffolding in place after cracks were discovered in a building in central Dunedin

Safety precautions were taken outside the Dunedin building after a concerned citizen reported unstable-looking cracks to the city council.

Carpenter Timothy McMullen said he was concerned that parts of the building at 170 Rattray Street could collapse if the building continued to be neglected.
There will be no “warning” when this happens.
“It will be very fast. If someone is under it, they will die.”
He would like to see the building restored if possible, but tearing it down would be better than letting it crack further.
He said, “How many other buildings are going down this road?”
McMullen said he reported the crack to the board as soon as he noticed it.

The building is located across the road from the site of the former Dragon Cafe building, which was demolished after its roof collapsed 10 years ago.
City Council Building Solutions Manager Paul Henderson said he’s been in touch with the owner’s agent to discuss the condition of the building.
The council issued a notice of repair and a structural engineer has since inspected the building and does not believe it is in danger of collapsing in the normal course of events.
The engineer recommended wooden scaffolding, which has since been installed, to protect pedestrians from any plaster falling off.
Henderson said the board is satisfied that the risks are being addressed and that the notice to reform is expected to be rescinded.
McMullen said he hopes the engineer is right and respects their judgment, but only time will tell.
The building is owned by John Fary and Tony Claire, Farry Clear Ltd.
Fary said he thought the building was slated for demolition, but since it had little to do with the site, he wasn’t sure.
Clear did not respond to the comment.
