Japan calms fears of eruption of Mount Fuji after earthquake

TOKYO (Reuters) – Japanese authorities on Friday dampened speculation about a possible volcanic eruption at Mount Fuji, the country’s highest peak, after a 4.8-magnitude earthquake sent the topic trending on Twitter.

The earthquake, which occurred at 6:37 am (2137 GMT Thursday) hit areas near the famous mountain, 100 kilometers (63 miles) west of Tokyo, but there were no immediate reports of injuries, injuries or serious damage.

The hashtag “Mt Fuji eruption” began in Japanese on Twitter, with one user saying, “Tokyo will be in real trouble if Mount Fuji erupts. With the coronavirus going on, where can we escape?”

The volcano last erupted more than 300 years ago, but it is still active and sometimes goes through periods of activity that can produce several hundred tremors per month.

A Japanese government commission said last year that any major volcanic eruption would rain so much ash on Tokyo that its transport network of trains and highways would be paralyzed within three hours.

But the Japan Meteorological Agency said there was no data to suggest an increased chance of an eruption of Mount Fuji.

“We did not see any specific anomalies in the monitoring data related to Mount Fuji. There may be no link (between the earthquake and a possible eruption),” an agency official told a news conference.
