Swami Prasad Maurya about leaving the cabinet of Yogi Adityanath

Swami Prasad Maurya boasted that his resignation shook the BJP.

Swami Prasad Moriah, whose resignation from Yogi Adityanath’s government sent a wave of BJP exit ahead of the elections, said he would reveal his next move on Friday and that he “has not left the BJP or joined the Samajwadi Party” yet.

Still targeting the BJP, he made a series of contradictory statements about joining the Samajwadi Party led by Akhilesh Yadav.

“My movement caused an earthquake in the BJP,” he boasted, claiming in an interview with NDTV that more ministers and MLAs would be leaving the party with him.

Four MLAs have already announced their exits with Mr. Maurya – Roshan Lal Verma, Brijesh Prajapati, Bhagwati Sagar and Vinay Shakya.

Mr. Moriah tried to be careful about his next steps.

Contrastingly with a major revelation on Friday, Moriah said, “I have only resigned from my position as a minister. I will be leaving the BJP soon. At the moment, I am not joining the Samajwadi Party.”

“I rejected the BJP…there is no doubt to return,” he qualified at the same time.

Meanwhile, Mr. Moriah was quoted as telling the news agency ANI, “I will join the Samajwadi Party on January 14. I have not received calls from any politician, small or big.”

On Tuesday, shortly after Mr. Moriah posted his resignation letter on Twitter, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav tweeted a picture with him, welcoming him and his supporters to his party.

He agreed, saying, “Akhilish Yadav congratulated me.”

“I will talk to my people today and tomorrow. I will reveal my next political movement on the 14th (Friday). I will tell you my decision and who will come with me,” he said.

Stunned by the exodus of strategically important OBC leaders (the other backward caste), the BJP leadership tasked Yogi Adityanath’s deputy Keshav Prasad Maurya with persuading the rebels to change their mind.

Mr. Moriah, 68, was one of the most prominent backward leaders in the BJP and was key to the party’s strategy of reeling in non-Yadav OPC voters in the UP elections, pitting Akhilesh Yadav.

“Keshav Moriah is my brother. But for the past five years he has also been helpless,” quipped Mr. Moriah, noting that they share a strained relationship with Prime Minister Yogi Adityanath.

Mr. Moriah, two months ago, met with Federal Home Minister Amit Shah to complain about Yogi Adityanath’s modus operandi. But the party took no action and a three-member team from Delhi sent to the UP failed to address the discontent in its ranks.
