Madeira earthquake: A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck a popular tourist island

A magnitude 5.1 earthquake hit the popular tourist islands of Madeira in Portugal.

The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center said the quake occurred at a depth of three kilometers and struck near the capital, Funchal.

EMSC added that the strike struck at 4.32 a.m. local time and a tremor was felt 40 kilometers away from about 207,000 people in total.

Residents of the area reported that they woke up from their sleep due to the strength of the earthquake, shaking their bedrooms.

The EMSC warned of the possibility of aftershocks in the coming hours or days and advised people to stay away from the affected areas for their own safety.

One person wrote on Twitter: “Woke up at 4:30 because the building was shaking. Didn’t feel strong here and lasted about 10 seconds.

“I didn’t know Madeira could be hit by such strong earthquakes.”

Another reported getting up on his bed and shaking the door, while one person said, “Very strong for what we normally feel in Madeira. It definitely woke us up.”

The earthquake of magnitude 6.1 was initially reported before it was later reduced.

According to VolcanoDiscovery.com, shallow earthquakes like this are felt more strongly than deep earthquakes because they are closer to the surface.

“Based on the initial seismic data, the earthquake may have been felt by many people in the epicenter area,” the site stated.
