Cheshire residents reported an earthquake as an RAF plane made a sonic boom overhead

Multiple reports have been made of an earthquake in and around the Cheshire region caused by a hypersonic boom caused by an RAF aircraft.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) confirmed it had received “numerous reports” from residents across the northwest, including Lancashire, Merseyside, Greater Manchester and Cheshire.

The tremors were claimed to have occurred between 11 am and 11.07 am today (Tuesday 15 February) with reports that an aircraft was breaking the sound barrier.

When examining data from seismic networks, BGS concluded that there were signals “consistent with a possible acoustic source”.

It happened while BAE Sytsems was flying in the area with a Typhoon jet, and the organization has since confirmed that the event was a supersonic explosion from the aircraft.

A BGS spokesperson said: “BGS has received numerous reports from residents mainly in the Lancashire area but also in Merseyside, Greater Manchester and Cheshire who reported a hair event sometime around 11am today.

“Data from BGS seismic networks were examined and signals corresponding to a potential sound source at that time were recorded.

“BAE (sic – BAE Systems) confirmed that it had airborne aircraft at the time and two RAF aircraft but could not confirm whether any of them were hypersonic.”
