An earthquake measuring 2.8 on the Richter scale struck Birmingham, Walsall and Wolverhampton

An earthquake struck Birmingham and the West Midlands last night, the British Geological Survey (BGS) said.

The earthquake – which measured 2.8 on the Richter scale – occurred at 10.50 pm, and woke residents up as it “rattled their homes”.

PSG said the quake hit Walsall the worst, with a depth of seven kilometers (4.35 miles).

The effects were felt by residents of Birmingham, Wolverhampton and Dudley within 20 km of the epicenter.

Some who felt the quake said the quake shook their homes.

“It was like a wardrobe falling or an explosion in the window,” one said.

BGS said the quake was about 13,000 east of the 4.7-magnitude Dudley earthquake, which was felt across most of England when it struck on September 22, 2002.

This comes after three specific storms have hit the UK in recent days.

Weather warnings were issued by the Bureau of Meteorology as Storm Dudley, Storm Eunice, and Storm Franklin brought severe weather conditions to most of the country, including strong winds and torrential rain.

No damage has been reported.
