Earthquakes were felt in parts of the UK as a 4.9 magnitude earthquake struck northeast Shetland

Homes in parts of the UK were left shaking this morning after an earthquake hit the Shetland coast.

The British Geological Survey said a 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck about 11 miles (180 km) northeast of Shetland at around 5.32 a.m.

She said people as far away as Aberdeen reported “three waves of vibration in about three seconds”.

Adam Priest said the quake shook his Nesting house, saying, “The house shook for 30 seconds, like a tuning fork.

“It woke me up at first and then kept shivering, slowly waning within 30 seconds.”

Meanwhile in Sandwick, Rebecca Collier said she was already awake and heard a trembling noise before her walls started shaking.

“At first I thought the washer was spinning, but it felt too strong for that,” she said.

British Geological Survey (BGS) data shows that the Lerwick Seismic Station recorded activity for about two minutes.

While some received a blunt awakening from a gurgling, many said they didn’t feel it — or slept through it.

This morning’s earthquake occurred in roughly the same area of ​​the sea where a 4.8-magnitude earthquake could be felt across the islands on January 9, 2007.

The British Geological Survey has been contacted for comment.
