Austin FC returns from break to Battle of San Jose Earthquakes

After the first international break of the Major League Soccer season, Austin Football Club are set to face conference opponents San Jose on Saturday at 6:30 p.m., as Verde and Black travel to California for their first game since March 20.

“You don’t get a lot of opportunity to give the guys a few days off, so we’re taking advantage of that,” said Austin FC coach Josh Wolff. “And it’s good for them to walk away, to re-energize them, and obviously we worked on some things in the training before the break and after the break.”

Austin FC got off to a great start to the season, winning their first two games 10-1. These two victories were followed by some tough matches, losses and draws against Portland and Seattle respectively.

The first-ever MLS match was at Q2 Stadium in Austin last year against Earthquakes in which the match ended in a goalless draw. The two teams met two more times last season, winning both matches San Jose. Javier “Chauves” Lopez was key to earthquakes last season, scoring three times against Verdi and Black.

“It’s a road test,” said Austin defender Nick Lima. “We didn’t win on the road. We didn’t even get a point on the road… It starts with being difficult to play against us at home especially but on the road.”

Earthquakes enter the season’s no-win showdown with a 0-3-1 record. San Jose showed his ability to score, as evidenced by their 3-3 draw with Columbus.

Defense has been key for Austin so far, having just allowed three goals in four games. For their head coach, he knows how important that is and always will be.

“We definitely underestimated the opponents,” Wolf said. “We’ve done a good job so far at being compact when we want to press high, when we need to be in the middle of our group and definitely defend in the red.”

Offensively, Sebastien Driosi has led Austin FC so far this youth season with three goals. Cecilia Dominguez and Ethan Finley scored two goals. Driosi added assists, tied for second place in the team only behind Diego Vagondes who has three assists.

This will be the first of five games in April for Austin FC. The match will be broadcast on KBVO with a pre-match show starting at 6:00 PM
