A government review on whether the hydraulic fracturing ban should be lifted will tell that the risks of extracting crust gas are no worse than coal mining and can be mitigated. Fracking sees water, sand, and chemicals being injected into cracks between rocks in an attempt to release trapped gases.

A ban on this practice was imposed in 2019 after a magnitude 2.9 event occurred at a site being operated in Lancashire.

A subsequent investigation found that it was not possible to accurately predict the probability or magnitude of earthquakes.

Mr Kwarteng subsequently asked the British Geological Survey to investigate whether any alternative techniques could be used to reduce the risk and scale of any seismic events in the UK.

Professor Richard Davies, the university’s vice chancellor and petroleum geologist, said broad earthquakes from fracking are unlikely to pose a significant risk.

“We lived with them without much concern in the era of coal mines,” he said.

Professor Davies added: “During coal production there were huge numbers of earthquakes in the UK until the 1980s and coal miners’ strike.

“Effectively, Margaret Thatcher stopped the earthquakes, and it wasn’t very big at all. It’s the same group of rocks.”

“The risk of earthquakes is high, but the impact is low.”

Polls indicate that public support for hydraulic fracturing remains low.

The latest poll found support at just 17 percent.

Tom Vians, campaign and policy director for rural charity CPRE, said: “Opening the door once again to fracking is an absurd decision by the government that is guaranteed to spark anger and desperation within any community threatened by a potential fracking site in their area.

“Public opposition to hydraulic fracturing has grown to the point where it is difficult to see how any project can move forward without mass protests.”
