Hundreds of earthquakes near an Alaskan volcano that has been dormant for nearly 800 years

A swarm of hundreds of small earthquakes has been recorded near an Alaskan volcano that has been dormant for at least 800 years.

The earthquakes occurred under Mount Edgecumbe near Sitka, but they may not be a sign of volcanic activity, according to Dave Schneider, a USGS geophysical researcher at the Alaska Volcano Observatory in Anchorage.

The 3,200-foot volcano is located on Kruzov Island, 15 miles west of Sitka, and is part of a large underwater volcanic field.

“These are not necessarily related to volcanic activity, they may be of a tectonic nature or a combination of tectonic and volcanic,” Schneider said.

“We can’t really tell the difference at this point.”

Given the current situation, he said, there is no major cause for concern.

He said: “Volcanoes have swarms of earthquakes that do not lead to volcanic eruptions.”

Data shows that quite a few earthquakes began in the area in 2020, with about 40 earthquakes in the past two years until this latest round, and most were too small to be recorded at multiple seismic stations, according to the Associated Press.

Alaska has about 90 volcanoes that have been active in the last 10,000 years, most of them in the outback and not near towns the size of Sitka, which has a population of 8,500.

According to the Associated Press, there is no written record of the eruption at all, but there is an oral history of Tlingit about small eruptions about 800 years ago.

There is geological evidence of a volcanic eruption about 4,500 years ago, as well as evidence of a major eruption 14,500 years ago.
