Jakarta (Antara) – A 5-magnitude earthquake struck northern Halmahera district in North Maluku province on Monday, causing damage to community buildings, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported.

“According to the latest report, the earthquake caused damage to the mosque building in Ngedio Village, West Jalila District, North Halmahera District,” BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Mitigation Coordinator, Daryono, noted in a statement on Monday.

Daryono noted that the earthquake, which had an epicenter on land at a depth of 116 km at 1.97 degrees north latitude and 127.83 degrees east longitude, was a medium-sized earthquake.

He noted that the catastrophe occurred due to the slope of the Maluku Sea Plate under the Halmahera Plate.

“Analysis of the source mechanism shows that the earthquake combined shear and ascending motions,” Dariono stated.

He added that according to modeling results, the earthquake, which struck at 10:04 a.m. West Indonesia Standard Time (WIB), did not have the potential to cause a tsunami.

Daryono noted that the shock caused by the earthquake was felt at Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) IV in Galela sub-district and MMI II-III in Tupelo sub-district, northern Halmahera district.

Many residents felt the MMI IV shocks indoors and some people outdoors during the day, and it also caused crackling sounds from windows, walls, dishes, and doors.

Meanwhile, the jerks of the MMI III felt like trucks passing in the distance, while the jerks of the MMI II made suspended light objects to sway.

According to the BMKG monitoring, as of 10:42 AM WIT, no aftershocks occurred.

Meanwhile, Head of Emergency and Logistics Division of North Halmahera Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) Heni Tonga noted that as of Monday at 1:02pm WIT, in addition to the village of Ngidiho, the shocks are said to have caused damage in Barataku villages. , Towara, and Dokulamo in the northern Halmahera district.
