A senior official said there are several factors when it comes to some UAE residents feeling the tremors more severely than others, such as whether they live in a villa or a skyscraper and on which floor.

Residents of the United Arab Emirates have reported multiple tremors over the past few weeks due to a series of earthquakes in Iran. None of them were a cause for concern, but many residents gathered in open areas near their homes while others were awakened by earthquakes and saw furniture and chandeliers shaking.

According to the NCM, it hit as far as southern Iran on Saturday, its strength ranged from 4.2 to 6.3 on the Richter scale. People reported earthquake aftershocks also after the earthquake.

In an exclusive interview with Khaleej Times, Khalifa Al Beri, head of the Tsunami Early Warning Center at the UAE National Center of Meteorology, said UAE residents should not worry about earthquakes because buildings in the country apply global seismic codes.

He said that people who live on the first and second floors and those on the tenth floor or higher will feel a different intensity.

“People who walk, run or do some sports may not feel the tremor. But people who are sitting in a chair or lying in bed will feel more intense. Another factor is whether the tremor occurs in the morning or at night. Because the morning is not as quiet as night, so people can feel more intense at night.”

In addition, the distance between the epicenter and the location where people live is also a major factor when it comes to feeling acute.

Why do aftershocks occur?

Khalifa Al-Abri noted that aftershocks usually occur after a moderate or strong earthquake when the energy remaining from the ground after the first tremors is released.

“Earthquakes that are usually more than 6.0 on the Richter scale may generate aftershocks for a few days, weeks or months as well, depending on the region. We shouldn’t worry about aftershocks because most of the energy has already been released in the first major earthquake. Therefore, aftershocks are Mostly less severe.”

The head of the Tsunami Early Warning Center at the National Center of Meteorology in the United Arab Emirates stated that it is difficult to predict how long the tremors can last because they depend on the release of energy.
