Two 5.4-magnitude earthquakes hit Flores Sea, says BMKG

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded two earthquakes of magnitude 5.4, caused by different mechanisms, in the Flores Sea, East Nusa Tenggara, on Saturday afternoon.

The epicenter of the first earthquake was located at 7.65 degrees south latitude and 122.43 degrees east longitude, 11 kilometers below the Flores Sea.

Meanwhile, the epicenter of the second quake was at 7.57 degrees south latitude, 122.45 degrees east longitude and 12 km below sea level.

He pointed out that the distance between the epicenters of the first and second earthquakes was relatively close by about 4.2 kilometers.

The two earthquakes were classified as shallow, he said, adding that they did not cause tsunamis.

“It’s interesting that these two earthquakes have different source mechanisms. The first earthquake had a slip mechanism, but the second earthquake had a thrust fault mechanism,” Dariono said.

Moreover, since the two earthquakes were caused by different mechanisms and separated by approximately 1.5 hours, he said he suspected that the second earthquake occurred due to the static impact of the first.

“Looking at the epicenter, these two earthquakes are not in the path of the back-arc earthquake source on Flores, but are located to the north of the widely known source,” he added.

As of 3:58 p.m. local time, BMKG observation results showed one earthquake aftermath, with the greatest strength of 4.0 recorded at 3:19 p.m.

On December 14, 2021, an earthquake of magnitude 7.4 was recorded in the Flores Sea.
