The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has so far recorded more than 3,200 aftershocks in the aftermath of the 7.0-magnitude earthquake that struck the city of Taium, Abra, on July 27.

As of 8 a.m., Monday, August 8, Phivolcs had detected 3,235 aftershocks, ranging in strength from 1.4 to 5.1.

Of the recorded earthquakes, 977 were mapped by three or more stations.

Phivolks said 63 of those tremors were felt.

The earthquake, measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale, struck Apra at 8:43 a.m. on July 27, counties in northwest Luzon and adjacent areas, including Metro Manila.

Phivolcs said Northwest Luzon is one of the seismically active regions in the country due to the presence of active faults that include the northern parts of the Philippine Fault, the Abra River Fault, the Western Ilocos Fault System, and the Naglipakan Fault.

It also indicated the presence of other nearby local faults, some of which may now be covered by recent deposits, and active faults offshore that are potential sources of small to strong earthquakes.
