Mexican earthquake breaks 4-foot waves in Devils Hole

In a surprising geology oddity, Monday’s 7.6-magnitude earthquake in Mexico caused 4-foot waves in Devils Hole, a separate unit of Death Valley National Park in the Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Nye County.

Video footage of the “desert tsunami” on the park’s website shows the ripples that occurred here.

The earthquake shook the Mexican states of Colima and Michoacan at 11:05 a.m. Twenty-two minutes later, water began flowing 1,500 miles into Devils Hole. The waves reached 4 feet around 11:35 a.m.

Devils Hole is a partially water-filled limestone cave near the Inyo County Line in California. The cave is hundreds of feet deep, but the endangered devil fish depends on algae that grows on a shallow sunlit shelf.

Monday’s waves, known technically as “sesh,” moved sediments and rocks on the shallow escarpment, and also removed much of the algae growth. In the short term, this reduces the food available to the young fish.

“Puppet fish have survived many of these events in recent years,” said Kevin Wilson, an aquatic ecologist with the National Park Service. “We didn’t find any dead fish after the waves stopped.”

The number of devils puppy fish has been on the rise lately. Nine years ago, there were only 35 fish in their natural habitat. In March of this year, the number of fish was up to 175. The annual autumn fish count is planned for this weekend.
