Agency: One dead in Indonesia in an earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale, north of Sumatra

JAKARTA (Reuters) – An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 struck Indonesia’s North Sumatra province on Saturday, killing one person, the country’s meteorology and geophysics agency said.

BMKG President Dwikorita Karnawati told reporters that nine people were injured in the earthquake, which was felt in several towns and prompted people to flee their homes.

Five homes were damaged and 53 aftershocks were recorded after people felt the quake at 2:28 am (1928 GMT), it said, adding that there is no danger of tsunami but warns of possible landslides in hilly areas.

Indonesia experiences frequent earthquakes that lie on both sides of the ‘Pacific Ring of Fire’, a seismically active region where different layers of the Earth’s crust meet.

A rift along the island of Sumatra can be particularly active and dangerous. In 2004, a massive 9.1-magnitude earthquake and tsunami off the northern tip of Sumatra killed 226,000 people in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand and nine other countries.
