Strongest earthquake in nearly a year hits Groningen overnight

The worst earthquake in nearly a year shook the ground near Wirdum early Saturday morning, NOS reported. The quake is one of the 10 most powerful the region has experienced, according to the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI).

The 3.1-magnitude earthquake hit the village between Lübersum and Abingedam at around 4:15 a.m., the strongest since a 3.2-magnitude earthquake struck Jarlsauer in November 2021.

“A lot of people have felt this,” KNMI seismologist Laszlo Evers told NOS. This was a really strong earthquake.”

The damage caused by the earthquake is still unknown. However, residents of Groningen, Abingedam, Delvesil and Hogesand have all reported on social media that they felt the quake, according to NOS.

It is possible that the earthquake, which was caused by the extraction of gas, occurred at a depth of three kilometers, according to the institute KNMI. This is shallow for natural earthquakes, which usually occur at greater depth.
