The newly installed seismograph in the Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences at Florida State University is already helping scientists discover and analyze earthquakes around the world.
On June 23, before 11:30 am, the seismograph recorded a 7.4-magnitude earthquake in southern Mexico, centered in the state of Oaxaca. The strong earthquake left at least seven dead and damaged hundreds of buildings.
Information from the Florida State University Earthquake Observatory was helpful in providing real-time data to the US Geological Survey National Center (NEIC) of the U.S. Geological Survey when an Oaxaca earthquake occurred.
The seismic observatory, which has been operating and operating in the university’s new EOAS building since March, uses an seismograph and data logging system to digitize and tag data before it is sent to various agencies, including NEIC, the Booker Seismology Laboratory, and the data management center of integrated research institutions for seismology In Seattle.
NEIC uses data from Florida and several hundred other earthquake stations in the United States and around the world to quickly locate and mark earthquakes. The information is verified by seismologists and posted on the center’s website within minutes, with the aim of mitigating risks to human life.
The seismograph and data logger were a gift from Bob Hut, a former member of the American Geological Survey Albuquerque Laboratory.
Hat said: “When I retired, my wife and I moved to Tallahassee to be close to our son and family.” “I knew there were no high-quality seismic maps buried deep in the area, so I approached the Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences with the idea of cooperating with them in the installation. I didn’t want to allow the valuable seismometer to sit in my garage or try to operate it in an unhelpful way.”
The seismograph in the well is designed to be anchored to the depths of the earth to avoid seismic noise near the surface, which includes everything from trees blowing in the wind to vehicle traffic. A drilling hole next to the EOAS building allowed the seismograph to be fixed in the primary limestone bedrock approximately 140 feet below the surface.
Since its installation, the Oaxaca earthquake has been just one of many seismic events discovered by the facility. In late May, an earthquake gauge seized an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 when it struck the nation of Tonga in the South Pacific.
“These events demonstrate the excellent sensitivity and large recording range of the modern seismic system,” said Hat.
EOAS officials say the system is so powerful that it can capture low ground motion up to a 5-degree earthquake on the other side of the planet and much smaller earthquakes in closer ranges.
Vincent Salters, head of the Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, said the seismometer fills a geographical gap in the global seismic network and provides important information to form an accurate picture of the Earth’s interior.
“Earthquakes allow us to have an image inside the Earth, like ultrasound, that allows us to see inside the body,” said Salters. “It is a living reminder that the Earth’s interior is dynamic and affects the surface on which we live.”
