A strong earthquake collapses houses in Java, Indonesia. 62 dead

CIAANUR, Indonesia (AP) – A strong, shallow earthquake tore down buildings and walls on Indonesia’s densely populated main island on Monday, killing at least 62 and injuring hundreds as people fled into the streets, some stained with blood and debris.

Officials were collecting information on the death toll from the quake in the remote area.

Emergency workers treated the injured on stretchers and blankets outside hospitals, on balconies and in parking lots in Cianjur district, about three hours’ drive from the capital, Java. The wounded, including children, were given oxygen masks and intravenous lines and resuscitated.

“I passed out,” said Hassan, a construction worker who uses one name like many Indonesians. “I saw my friends running to flee the building. But it was too late to go out and I hit a wall.”

Residents, some crying and carrying babies, fled damaged homes after a 5.6-magnitude earthquake shook the area in West Java province in the late afternoon, at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). It also caused panic in the greater Jakarta area, where high-rises swayed and some people were evacuated.

Rescue teams and civilians in Cianjur were searching for people buried in collapsed brick houses. In many homes, pieces of concrete and roofing tiles fell inside the bedrooms.

Shopkeeper Dewi Risma was working with customers when the earthquake hit, and she ran towards the exit.

“Vehicles stopped on the road because the earthquake was very strong,” she said. “I felt it shook three times, but the first one was the strongest for about 10 seconds. The roof of the shop next to the one where I work collapsed, and people said two were injured.”

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency said the death toll had reached 62 and hundreds injured. More than 5,000 people have been evacuated.

The agency’s spokesman, Abdul Mahari, said 25 people were still trapped under the rubble in the village of Sigdel.

Several landslides blocked roads around Cianjur district. The agency said that among the dozens of damaged buildings, an Islamic boarding school, a hospital and other public facilities. Power outages have been reported.

Ridwan Kamil, the governor of West Java, said the local government, national police and Indonesian military were still gathering information.

“Because Cianjur features so many very remote places, we need that data to determine the situation,” Kamel said.

Most of the victims and survivors were taken to the Government Hospital in Cianjur.

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency has recorded at least 25 aftershocks.

“I felt that the earthquake was very strong. My colleagues and I decided to get out of our office on the ninth floor using the emergency stairs.”

The country of more than 270 million people is frequently hit by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis due to its location on the “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin.

In February, a 6.2-magnitude earthquake killed at least 25 people and injured more than 460 people in West Sumatra province. In January 2021, a 6.2-magnitude earthquake killed more than 100 people and injured nearly 6,500 in the province of West Sulawesi.
