Cianjur, West Java (Antara) – The death toll from the latest earthquake has risen, from 334 on December 4 to 602 on December 14, the provincial government of Cianjur has confirmed.

According to Cianjur District Chief Hermann Suhrmann, the number of residents killed in the earthquake has been verified based on names and addresses.

“I have received complete data on casualties from 13 sub-districts. The death toll from the latest earthquake, based on names and addresses, is 602,” Suhairman noted in a statement reported by Antara here on Friday.

A total of 397 of the 602 victims were found in Kojinang sub-district, he noted, adding that many of them died due to falling remains of collapsed buildings.

“The district administration has coordinated with the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) regarding the latest death toll,” he noted.

Suhairman said the latest death toll has been reported to the Ministry of Social Affairs to enable the victims’ heirs to obtain compensation.

A 5.6-magnitude earthquake hit Cianjur district in West Java province on November 21 at 1:21 pm local time.

According to the Cianjur district administration, the number of homes destroyed and severely damaged by the recent earthquake has risen to 8,151.

“The number of severely damaged homes has increased from 7,817 to 8,151 units. All of them have been verified,” Cianjur County Government Secretary Sisip said on December 4.

He explained that the number of houses that suffered moderate damage also increased from 10,589 to 11,210 units.

He pointed out that the number of homes with minor damage increased from 17,195 to 18,469 units, adding that the earthquake severely damaged 525 school buildings, 269 places of worship, 14 healthcare facilities and 17 administrative buildings.

According to Lamsaia, the government has prepared 2.5 hectares of land in Sirnagale village to be used for the construction of 200 earthquake-resistant houses.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian Red Cross has planned to build 500 temporary housing units for residents of Cianjur Province whose homes were demolished and badly damaged by the recent deadly earthquake. The temporary housing will be built in two villages in Cugenang sub-district and Nagrak village in Cianjur sub-district, PMI-Cianjur Office Disaster Emergency Response Unit Coordinator Fajar Aciana indicated in a recent statement.
