Would you use an earthquake bed that falls into a metal chamber and locks you inside?

Watch this video demonstrating Chinese inventor Wang Wenxi’s design of the “earthquake bed”. The bed contains sensors that detect tremors, which activate the bed to drop him (along with the person in the bed) into a metal chamber. After the bed falls into the metal box, a roof closes on top to secure the person inside. Anita Durairaj, writing in Newsbreak, describes the basic design of most earthquake beds, including Wenxi’s, and the latest one designed by Russian inventor Dahir Semenov:

Basically, the mattress will drop into the box and the lid will close over the box. Survival supplies will be readily available in the box for the person or persons sitting in it. Ventilation holes provide oxygen.

However, these beds haven’t really been used yet, so we don’t know how they will perform in real earthquake situations. However, not everyone is a fan. Durairaj explains:

While these are innovative, critics claim that the beds are like “convertible coffins” and would be a nightmare for those who don’t like cramped spaces.

If you don’t like the “coffin” designs, here’s a variation of the earthquake bed, by Indian inventor Pulkit Ahuja. This bed uses a slanted canopy for protection rather than dropping the person into a metal box. Kul Bhusan, writing for TechInAsia, explains:

The tilting canopy, made of carbon fiber reinforced Kevlar, is attached to the bed ends on one end and enclosed in a telescopic frame attached to the motors on the other. The earthquake detection sensors that power the protective mechanism can be located on the bed or synchronized wirelessly with the actuators.
