San Antonio residents feel a jolt after the 5.4-magnitude earthquake in West Texas

Did you feel a shake in San Antonio on Wednesday afternoon?

According to San Antonio police, residents in tall buildings near downtown felt tremors from what was likely caused by the magnitude 5.4 earthquake (reviewed from an earlier magnitude 5.3 report from the USGS) that occurred in West Texas.

The USGS website shows that this earthquake occurred about 24 miles northwest of Menton, Texas at 3:32 PM CST, which is about 350 miles northwest of San Antonio.

A few aftershocks were also recorded in the same area after the initial quake, and they can be seen here on the USGS’ seismograph.

Reports indicate that Wednesday’s quake is the third-strongest on record in Texas, after a magnitude 6.5 quake in 1931 and a magnitude 5.7 quake in 1995.

Because of the geology of our region, earthquakes of this magnitude can be felt at such a distance.
