An earthquake was felt in South Wales where the earthquake in the middle of the night caused houses and walls to shake | UK News

A small earthquake was recorded in south Wales – about eight miles north of the Rhondda Valley – just before midnight.

Matt O’Shea, from the Blainaw Gwent area, told Sky News that “the whole house shook for about five seconds”, and others said it felt like a car hit their property.

Many on social media said that at first they weren’t sure what had happened.

Twitter user @Loz_Coult94 said: “I thought someone broke into my house, no…just an earthquake in Wales!?”

Others described things like moving bookshelves and desks.

“I’m in Rhymney and I can feel the house shaking, I looked online to see if anyone else did..and it was an earthquake in South Wales. I think I need a change of pants,” @KrissOttley wrote on Twitter.

Helen Caswell added, “Our whole house in Rassau, Igbo Valley shook and woke my husband up! It really terrified us.”

Jack Hill, from Risca in Gwent, said on Facebook: “I thought some idiot had broken into my door the way my room shook.”

The earthquake that occurred at 11.59pm had a magnitude of 3.8 at a depth of two kilometers, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC).

It placed the site 12 kilometers (7.45 miles) north of Runda.

Google’s Android Earthquake Alerts System said the quake had a magnitude of 4.2.

The British Geological Survey, the main provider of earthquake data in the UK, has not released any information yet.
