Habitat for Humanity is coming to help repair earthquake-damaged homes, says Office of Emergency Services | The lost coastal hotspot

Additional help is on the horizon for Humboldt County residents displaced by the recent earthquakes. Humboldt County has now formalized an agreement with Habitat for Humanity Yuba/Sutter to help residents whose homes need an overhaul.

“We are providing much-needed assistance to displaced residents while continuing to explore every resource available to help our communities rebuild,” said Humboldt County District 2 Superintendent Michelle Bushnell. “The most important thing we can do is get people back to their homes, so we have worked to partner with organizations that have a lot of experience rebuilding homes after a disaster.”

The Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Services works in partnership with the City of Rio Del and the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) to identify and coordinate partnerships with nonprofit agencies that have expertise in disaster recovery, including home repair and rebuilding. Habitat for Humanity is a global housing nonprofit organization that works in communities in all 50 states of the United States and in nearly 70 countries. Through its Disaster Risk Reduction and Response programme, Habitat for Humanity will provide management and oversight services related to home reconstruction and rehabilitation to low- to very-low-income homeowners and residents whose homes have been displaced or whose homes have suffered significant damage as a result. from recent earthquakes.

“Through our experience with disaster relief, one thing we have learned is that every disaster is unique,” said Joseph Hill, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Yuba/Sutter. However, similar are the difficulties families face with displacement. Our goal at Habitat is not to forget the compassion that comes with this work as we coordinate with the Office of Emergency Services (OES), Humboldt County, and the City of Rio Dell in serving those in need by creating a quick-transfer process that is streamlined. “

Since the December 20 and January 1 earthquakes, building inspectors have identified approximately 91 buildings as being “red flagged” or unsafe for habitation, and more than 300 buildings “yellow flagged” or requiring various safety repairs. The Humboldt County Earthquake Assistance and Recovery Program provided approximately 104 displaced disaster-related families with temporary shelter as residents made necessary safety repairs to their homes or found alternative accommodations.

The Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Services’ Recovery Operations Center and local nonprofits continue to work to facilitate the organization of disaster management services for residents of Rio Del who were affected by the earthquake. These case management services will connect displaced incident-related residents to Habitat for Humanity, other nonprofit organizations, as well as to appropriate state and federal funding sources that may be available to eligible residents.

“It will take time to rebuild, and this partnership with Habitat for Humanity will bring Rio Del closer to our goal of ending earthquake-related displacement in our city,” said Kyle Knopp, Rio Del City Manager. “I want to thank the county for their work to bring these resources to Rio Dell. I also want to thank the Habitat for Humanity team for their willingness to help our community in our time of need.”

More information about earthquake management services and the agreement with Habitat for Humanity Yuba/Sutter will be made available at the City Hall of Earthquake Recovery taking place this evening, Thursday, March 2 at 6:30 p.m.

Senate Majority Leader Mike McGuire will open this virtual town hall. State and local leaders will then discuss ongoing actions that are being taken to move long-term recovery efforts forward and provide a comprehensive outline of services that may be available to low-income families experiencing earthquake-related displacement.
