A WQAD employee was inside a Davenport apartment building collapse

News 8 photojournalist Lenny Hoover lives in the building and was home when the collapse occurred, describing the feeling as like an earthquake.

DAVENPORT, Iowa – Just before 5 p.m. Sunday, May 28, six floors of “The Davenport” apartment complex located at 324 Main St. collapsed.

At this time, officials say there are no deaths they know of. The entire building is now slated for demolition, leaving each inhabitant without their belongings or a place to live.

One of our News 8 colleagues, photojournalist Linnea Hoover, lives in the apartment building and was inside, taking a nap, at the time of the destruction.

“Something woke me up. It sounded like the whole building was shaking, like an earthquake or like somebody hit something in the building. I thought my apartment was going to collapse,” Hoover recalled. “I felt like everything was about to fall apart.”

Hoover’s apartment was in a corridor next to the section that had been peeled away from the building, about two apartments apart. She was packing that day, as she was due to leave the building less than 48 hours later.

That afternoon, Hoover recalled smelling a foul odor throughout the apartment.

“It was specially arranged,” she said. “It always smelled in that building. But today it smelled worse, almost like gas, and now I know that’s the case.”

When first responders arrived, calls between firefighters and dispatchers revealed a strong smell of gas.

This is not the first time complaints have been filed against this building.

Residents reported seeing bricks falling off earlier this week, cracks in the walls and leaks throughout the building. News 8 previously reported about bricks falling from the structure back in August of 2020.

“There’s water seeping through the hallways everywhere. Try telling (the owners) and you won’t get a response,” Hoover said. “My favorite is the first couple of weeks when I first moved in. I got a response saying we wouldn’t respond to anything that wasn’t an emergency.”

According to Scott County records, the building is owned by Davenport Hotel LLC, which is related to a guy named Andrew Wold. The property owner has received notice and an order to demolish the building.

According to the Associated Press, Bould’s work phone number was not immediately available Sunday night, and attempts to reach him for comment were unsuccessful.

Now, Hoover says she wasn’t shocked how that happened. Furthermore, she blames the landlords for Sunday’s events, calling them “unreasonable”.

“I’m not surprised this happened. I’ve been trying to get out. Honestly, I would have broken my lease and taken the hit. But to see something like that, you can’t imagine how bad it got to that point.” “I blame the landlords. They knew there were problems and instead of sticking to it, instead of letting people out of their lease agreements, they want people to put up with them and it’s like I’m beholden to the slum landlords.”

Hoover and her fellow tenants will not be allowed back into the building to retrieve their belongings. News 8 learned that there are 84 housing units inside, including residential and commercial. Demolition of the complex is scheduled to begin on Tuesday 30 May.

A GoFundMe is set up for Hoover to help her get back on her two feet. You can donate here.

Those who would like more ways to donate can donate to residents through the Quad Cities Community Foundation or the Salvation Army.

Davenport’s Salvation Army will help fundraise for residents who have been displaced. Donations can be dropped off at 4001 North Brady Street.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
