A volcano has erupted 20 miles from the Icelandic capital, Reykjavik, after hundreds of small earthquakes were recently detected. Iceland’s Met Office described the eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula as “minor” and has not yet emitted any ash. Lava from Mount Fagradalsfjall emerges as a “series of fountains” from a 200-metre fissure. Icelandic police have restricted access to the volcano because it emits “life-threatening toxic gas pollution”. Local residents were advised to turn off the ventilation and sleep with their windows closed. Iceland, which is located near a volcanic hotspot, experiences volcanic eruptions every four to five years. The most disruptive volcanic eruption occurred in 2010 when the Eyjafjallajokull volcano blanketed the atmosphere with ash and dust.
