A year after the two devastating earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria's recent history, the repercussions of the disaster continue, especially on refugees. In Syria, these impacts are exacerbated by the ongoing, unfolding humanitarian crisis on a larger scale.

The first pair of devastating earthquakes on February 6, 2023, followed by repeated aftershocks, killed and injured thousands in both countries. It has displaced families and deprived them of vital services such as clean water, education and medical assistance. While humanitarian aid has provided some relief, ongoing conflicts and crises, especially in Syria, continually put the lives and well-being of refugees at risk.

The Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation (BTCF) launched humanitarian aid mechanisms, established a crisis response center within the organization and sent assessment teams to Turkey. Actively seek channels for distribution and support efforts in affected areas with an emphasis on respect, practicality and timeliness, while planning for medium and long-term assistance.

In Turkey, 58 distributions took place in Istanbul, Hatay, Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa and four other provinces. Cash cards were provided to 197,181 individuals, 13,651 volunteer shifts were mobilized, and 557,651 items of winter supplies (blankets, scarves, clothing) were donated. As for long-term plans, BTCF is currently in the planning stage and will build 3 schools accommodating approximately 2,000 students in primary and secondary schools. Furthermore, a community center and social welfare housing will be built to house 300 families not only affected by the earthquake, but also low-income residents.

In Syria, BTCF collaborated with Doctors of the World Turkey (DoTW-T) to reopen a clinic in the densely populated area of ​​Maarat Misrin sub-district in Idlib, providing basic and emergency services through the Kelly Primary Health Care Center (PHCC) by DoTW – Medical staff. From April to December 2023, the Department of Travel and Tourism provided 23,644 healthcare services to 8,439 unique beneficiaries. In December, 1,400 new beneficiaries visited the primary health care centre, and a total of 5,341 health care services were provided, 57.9% of whom were women. In addition, to reach those who have difficulty reaching the clinic, there is a mobile medical team to provide services. Given the need for essential health services, the partnership will continue until the end of 2024.
