MIAMI – A rare 4.0 magnitude earthquake was recorded off the east coast of Florida late Wednesday night, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

According to the USGS, the quake occurred about 100 miles east off the coast of Cape Canaveral around 10:48 p.m. — at a depth of about 6 miles below the seafloor.

As of 11:35 a.m. Thursday, 96 people had submitted “feel reports” to the agency, and according to CBS News Miami news partners at the Miami Herald, those reports came from witnesses across the Space Coast in places like Melbourne, Palm Bay and Satellite Beach. .

Earthquake experts point out that earthquakes are typically not felt until they reach magnitude 2.5, which is also the point at which some minor damage can occur.

A search of USGS records dating back to 1900 turned up the Atlantic region where the quake occurred, with the Miami Herald finding only one other earthquake in that region: a 3.3-magnitude quake on June 11, 2001, with an epicenter about 86 km away. A mile off the coast. St. Augustine Beach Coast.

The Miami Herald also found that eight additional incidents of seafloor shaking have been recorded since 2000, which were attributed to “pilot explosions” that were centered on the seafloor rather than beneath it. However, USGS officials did not report Wednesday night's quake to any experiments. What makes the quake even more mysterious is that the area is not known to host tectonic plate boundaries, which are prone to seismic activity, the Miami Herald reported.
