KARACHI: PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Friday visited the Karachi residence of Jang-Geo Group editor Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman, and expressed solidarity with her family under the difficult circumstances facing her. is facing.

Speaking to “Naya Pakistan” on Geo News, Rasheed said he once again called on Prime Minister Imran Khan to release the veteran journalist. “I also appeal to the Office of Accountability,” he said.

Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman was arrested by the NAB on March 12 on trumped-up charges relating to a property purchased more than three decades ago. A petition was filed shortly after against the arrest.

An accountability court then extended his pre-trial detention, after which a separate petition was filed against the extension. The petition argued that no reason had been provided by the court for the extension of the pre-trial detention.

The original petition, filed by Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman’s wife Shahina Shakil, said Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman had cooperated with officials and the arrest was a flagrant violation of standard operating procedures (SOP) of the responsibility watchdog.

The petition had challenged the arrest and abuse of authority of the NAB chairman, with the arrest being made while the case was still being verified. The petition further argued that the NAB violated the 2019 Businessmen Policy introduced by the government of Pakistan by arresting Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman. He said the extension of MSR’s pre-trial detention by the responsible court hearing the case should be declared null and void, along with the decision to arrest him.

According to a spokesperson for the Jang Group, the property was purchased from a private party 34 years ago and all evidence of this has been provided to the NAB and legal requirements met, such as duties and taxes.

However, petitions challenging the arrests were dismissed, sparking outrage from those who followed the case. The arrest of Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman has been criticized both locally and internationally as an attempt is made by an authoritarian regime to suppress dissent and free speech.
