BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ – More than a week after an earthquake struck the Northeast, we are aware of more potential damage in New Jersey.
The home in Berkeley Heights, Union County, is now deemed unsafe.
The Berkeley Heights Fire Department says the home's foundations failed, and investigators believe the April 5 earthquake may have been a contributing factor.
The home at Maple and Baker streets was placed on lockdown, and a person living in the home had to evacuate.
Investigators say saturated soil beneath the house and lack of maintenance were the main causes of the damage.
The 4.8-magnitude quake was centered in the Hunterdon County town of Redington, and was followed by dozens of aftershocks in the following days, including a 2.6-magnitude aftershock centered near Gladstone on Wednesday.
The quake and aftershocks have so far caused only minor damage in the tri-state area, including reports of gas leaks and water main breaks. There were initial concerns in Newark that the quake had moved the foundations of three nearby homes, but they were later determined to be safe.
The gymnasium at a New York City middle school was deemed unsafe after Building Department inspectors found cracks inside, but the rest of the school was determined to be OK. Janno Lieber, CEO and head of the Metropolitan Transport Authority, says the quake had “no real effects, no noticeable effects” on tunnels and bridges.
Experts previously warned that aftershocks could continue for about a week after the initial quake.
