Utah to participate in “The Great ShakeOut” earthquake drill on Thursday

SALT LAKE CITY — In just a few hours, more than 900,000 Utahns will “fall, cover and hold” as they participate in annual earthquake training.

While most people will participate in the drill at 10:15 a.m. Thursday, officials encourage Utahns to practice earthquake safety any day of the year.

“The Great Utah ShakeOut” shows the importance of earthquake preparedness as more than 85% of Utah's population lives in the Wasatch Fault zone.

The danger zone is 240 miles long and is one of the longest and most active faults in the world.

At Columbia Elementary School in West Jordan, principal Keith Klein says teachers and students are prepared for emergencies thanks to drills.

“What we will do is play some noise over the intercom that matches what a student might hear during an earthquake,” Klein explained.

Next, the teacher will order the students to fall, cover, and hold on. Three steps that can save lives in the event of an earthquake.

“It's important that they know how to conduct training in the absence of an adult because we never know where, when or how these things will happen,” Klein said.

Knowledge and practice are the main goals of the “Utah Great Moment” adopted by the state in 2012.

“If we look at the odds of a major earthquake, here along the Wasatch River, we have about 50%,” explained Steve Bowman, director of the Geological Hazards Program. “One in two earthquakes of magnitude 6.5 or larger in… less than 50 years.”

While Bowman said earthquakes cannot be predicted, there is technology that can detect them minutes before they happen.

States like California already have an “earthquake early warning system,” and experts have been working in recent years to bring this technology to Utah.

“It just takes some additional funding to retrofit our existing seismic sensor network,” Bowman said.

Efforts to request additional funding equivalent to about five million dollars during this year's legislative session were unsuccessful.

For now, Utah will host annual drills, so everyone will be prepared when an earthquake strikes.
