A 4.1 magnitude earthquake strikes the Los Angeles area

CORONA, Calif. — A small earthquake shook the Los Angeles area Wednesday afternoon, sending a small jolt into the midweek post-lunch doldrums in Southern California.

The US Geological Survey gave a preliminary magnitude of 4.1 for the quake, which occurred at 1:49 PM PT and was centered just over 5 miles southwest of the eastern Los Angeles suburb of Corona.

The US Geological Survey said the quake was superficial, only about a mile deep.

Earthquakes of this size are not uncommon in the region, and preliminary estimates from the US Geological Survey indicate that the shaking was weak relative to light.

The Los Angeles Fire Department said there were no reports of any damage or injuries. However, per protocol, the LAFD says it will go into “earthquake mode” and all 106 fire departments will fan out across the city to check critical infrastructure for any areas of concern.
