See: NASA satellite maps Beirut explosion
The world was shocked to hear the news of the explosion in Beirut caused by the 2,700 tons of ammonium nitrate stored in the city’s port. The blast killed at least 100 people and injured thousands.
The explosion also caused many people to lose their homes, as the explosions destroyed the buildings. Now, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has drawn a map of the Beirut area, showing the devastating damage caused by the explosion.

NASA Beirut explosion damage maps
In cooperation with the Earth Observatory in Singapore, NASA used advanced rapid imaging and analysis (ARIA) satellite-derived radar data to create a map showing the extent of damage from the twin explosions in Beirut, Lebanon on August 4.

Synthetic aperture radar data from space are commonly used to compare changes to the Earth’s surface before and after an earthquake or major event. In the case of Beirut, the devastating result of the explosion was shown.
The map shows pixels in red, orange, and yellow indicating the severity of the damage. Dark red pixels showed those areas in the Beirut port and its environs representing serious damage.
While the areas in the orange pixels are those that are moderately damaged, the areas in the yellow pixels are those areas that are likely to receive the least damage. Each of these colored pixels indicates an area of 33 yards (30 meters).
Using such maps will help authorities identify hard-hit areas to identify those who might need the most help. According to the authorities, the estimated damage of the blast could reach billions of dollars.
The NASA map contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data that has been processed by the European Space Agency (ESA) and analyzed by scientists from the ARIA team at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Caltech, Pasadena, California and the Earth Observatory in Singapore.

What are the data of synthetic aperture?
Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is used to create a 2D image or 3D reconstruction of objects such as landscapes. It is inspired by the SLAR and is usually installed on a moving platform, whether it is an aircraft or spacecraft.
For the SAR to create an image, successive pulses of radio waves are sent to the target’s sight. The echo of each radio wave is received and then recorded with a single beam-shaping antenna, at wavelengths that measure from a meter down to a millimeter.
The position of the antenna in relation to the target changes over time as the installed SAR moves on an aircraft or spacecraft.
The recording from multiple antenna positions is then combined due to the consecutive processing of the recorded radar echo signal. As a result, an artificial antenna aperture is formed, which allows creating high-resolution images.
The SAR app includes topography, oceanography, glaciology, geology and forests. It is useful in monitoring environmental events such as oil spills, floods, earthquakes, urban growth, global change, and military surveillance.
