Kilauea Volcano Update for Monday, July 8

Kilauea Volcano Update for Monday, July 8

(BIVN) – Kilauea Volcano has not erupted, and the USGS volcanic alert level remains at Advisory.

Over the weekend, there was an increase in the number of earthquakes measured in the Upper East Fault Zone. However, as of Monday, the number of earthquakes has decreased slightly. Earthquakes are still above background levels.

“Long-term gradual inflation of the summit and upper rift area has been ongoing since the end of the June 3, 2024 eruption,” the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory wrote Monday morning. “Any significant increases in seismicity and/or deformation could lead to a new eruptive episode, but there are no signs of an imminent eruption at this time.”

From the USGS HVO update dated July 8:

Summit and Upper Fault Zone Notes: Over the past 24 hours, approximately 20 earthquakes were observed beneath Kīlauʻīpel (Kīlauʻīa caldera) and 50 earthquakes were observed beneath the Upper East Fault Zone, most at depths between 1-3 km (0.6-1.8 mi) below the surface. The number of Upper East Fault Zone events decreased compared to yesterday (which saw 95 events) but remains high above the background for this area. Tilt gauges at the Kilauea summit area show a slight decrease in inflationary ground deformation rates over the past day: the SDH instrument southwest of the summit recorded approximately 2 microradians of inflationary tilt and the UWE instrument northwest of the summit shows a qualitatively slight inflationary tilt (less than 1 microradian, see Watch Notice below). GPS instruments around the summit area continue to show a long-term gradual increase since the end of the eruption on June 3, 2024. The most recent measurement of sulfur dioxide emissions at the summit was about 75 tons per day on June 28, 2024.

Top: Number of earthquakes that occurred each day during the past week (blue bars). Red line is the total energy released. Bottom: Depth of earthquakes that occurred during the past week in the area shown on the map above. Depth is reported relative to sea level, which is zero depth in the chart above. In both figures, the size of the circle represents magnitude, and the color indicates depth. (Graphs from the USGS)

Middle and Lower Rift Zone Notes: Earthquake and ground deformation rates beneath the Middle and Lower East Rift Zone and Lower Southwest Rift Zone remain low. Recent volcanic activity and ongoing unrest have been limited to the summit and upper rift zones. Measurements from continuous gas monitoring stations downwind of Puʻuʻōʻō in the Middle East Rift Zone—the site of volcanic activity from 1983 to 2018—remain below detection limits for sulfur dioxide, indicating that sulfur dioxide emissions from Puʻuʻōʻō are negligible.

Analysis: Following the eruption on June 3, 2024, magma re-pressurized the storage system beneath Halema'uma'u and the South Caldera, triggering seismic activity in the South Halema'uma'u Caldera and the Upper East Rift Zone. At this time, it is not possible to say whether this activity will lead to an intrusion or eruption in the near future, or whether it will simply continue as seismic disturbances at depth. Changes in the nature and location of disturbances can occur rapidly, as can the potential for eruption, but there are no signs of an imminent eruption at this time.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
