China has suspended nuclear non-proliferation and arms control talks with the US in response to US arms sales to Taiwan, according to official Chinese spokesmen. The US and China resumed semi-official talks on nuclear weapons in March for the first time in five years. Last year, US President Joe Biden signed off on an $80m (£64.6m) grant to Taiwan to buy American military equipment through a program called foreign military finance (FMF). China sees self-governing Taiwan as a breakaway province that will eventually come under Beijing's control, and has not ruled out using force to seize the island.
