WEST TEXAS – A 4.9 magnitude earthquake struck West Texas Monday night, with aftershocks felt as far north as Amarillo and as far south as Austin.

The earthquake struck at about 10:30 p.m. about 200 miles west of Fort Worth in Fisher County. The epicenter was eight miles northeast of Hermley, west of Abilene.

Although the epicenter of the earthquake was hundreds of miles away from North Texas, some aftershocks were still being felt.

The aftershocks measured about 3.1 magnitude, Scott Padgett, chief meteorologist for the state of Texas, told CBS News. They were felt as far north as Amarillo and as far south as Austin, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

In addition to this earthquake, there were two other earthquakes next to it, one with a magnitude of 3.1 and the other with a magnitude of 4.4.

Fisher County has a population of approximately 3,622. No damage or injuries were reported.

Are earthquakes common in Texas?

The last time an earthquake was felt in North Texas was in May, when two quakes struck Johnson County near Mansfield. Initial reports put the quakes at magnitudes 3.0 and 3.2.

According to the TexNet earthquake catalog, most of the earthquakes this year in Texas have occurred in the west, near Odessa, and in the south, outside San Antonio.
