Earthquake shakes Shelby – News – The Free Press

Danny Bolton said he was sitting in the living room of his home off 18 South Carolina, drinking coffee on Sunday morning when he heard a loud boom and felt the shaking of the house.

There were frequent wrecks on the road and he said he and his daughter ran outside to check.

“We thought it was a tractor and a trailer upside down,” he said.

It turned out to be a 5.1-magnitude earthquake, the largest earthquake to hit the state since 1916 when a 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck near Skyland, according to the National Weather Service in Greenville, South Carolina. The National Weather Service said the quake occurred at 8:07 a.m., following a much smaller quake several hours earlier.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The US Geological Service said the epicenter was about 2.5 miles (four kilometers) southeast of Sparta.

Sparta is about 123 miles north of Shelby.

Mitchell Ribe said he was sitting on the couch at his home off Berk Road in Shelby when the earthquake struck.

He said, “You can feel the house shaking, and you can hear it.”

He said the windows were shivering in their frames and there was a loud bang.

“I felt the wind was blowing very hard,” said Repi.

He said he knew then about an earthquake and when he checked Facebook, it was full of people sharing similar stories.

Charlotte Banovich, a meteorologist in Charlotte, has taken to Facebook Live to provide updates on the quake, and said his social media channels are lighting up with comments, posts and personal accounts about the earthquake.

People were likely to see some minor damage from the earthquake, such as cracks in buildings and falling panels, Panovic said, but they did not expect any major damage.

He said that at the time the earthquake was reported, it was the largest earthquake in the United States.

“Who would have thought that the largest would be in North Carolina,” he said.
