4.9 magnitude earthquake in Indonesia leaves one dead, 82 injured

JAKARTA: A 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia's West Java province on Wednesday (September 18), killing one person and injuring at least 82 others, officials said.

The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said the quake struck at 9.41 a.m. local time (0241 GMT), with its epicentre 24 km (15 miles) southeast of Bandung and at a depth of 10 km.

An elementary school student with asthma was moved out of his school building during the tremors.

He collapsed and was taken to hospital where he died, said Irwin Nurdiansyah, a press officer at the Bandung disaster agency.

The worst-hit area is Bandung, followed by Garut, Abdul Muhari, spokesman for the National Disaster Management and Mitigation Agency, told Xinhua.

In Bandung city alone, 81 people were injured, and all victims from both areas were taken to hospitals and health clinics for treatment.

“Assessments are ongoing, but we estimate that about 700 houses have been damaged, from minor to severe levels,” Mohari said, adding that nearly 100 health, educational, religious and public facilities, including markets, were also damaged.

He added that the disaster forced 450 people to take refuge in government buildings and other facilities.

Emergency tents have been set up, and aid such as medicines, mattresses, blankets, tents and baby supplies have been distributed, although more is needed.

The Malaysian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that there were no reports of any Malaysians being involved or affected by the earthquake that struck Bandung so far, Bernama news agency reported.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the ministry, known as Wisma Putra, said it was closely monitoring the aftermath of the earthquake through the Malaysian embassy in Jakarta.

Malaysians in the affected areas are advised to remain vigilant and follow the advice and guidance provided by local authorities.
