Tsunami warning after 5.9 magnitude quake hits country, putting people on alert | World | News

A tsunami warning has been issued following a 5.9-magnitude earthquake that struck Japan. Local media outlet NTV News reported that a tsunami wave as high as 20 cm was seen in the port of Kozushima, while a tsunami wave as high as 50 cm was seen in Hachijo-jima, Hachijo Town, Tokyo.
Japan's Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning this morning for remote islands south of Tokyo after an earthquake possibly caused by volcanic activity.
The agency warned of the possibility of tsunami waves reaching one meter above the high tide level on the coasts of the Izu and Ogasawara island chains.
The US Geological Survey said the earthquake measured 5.6 on the Richter scale.
Although slight waves are expected along the coasts of the southeast Pacific Ocean, the Japan Meteorological Agency confirmed that there is no danger from them.
A tsunami measuring about 50 centimeters (about 20 inches) was detected in the Yaini area of Hachijo Island about 30 minutes after the quake struck. Smaller tsunami waves were also detected on three other islands, Kozushima, Miyakejima and Izu Oshima, the agency said.
The agency said the quake struck about 180 kilometers south of Hachijo Island, which is about 300 kilometers south of Tokyo. Hachijo Island residents said they did not feel the quake and only heard a tsunami warning, according to Japanese television channel NHK.
A tsunami warning went into effect after underwater volcanic activity, said Fumihiko Imamura, a seismologist at Tohoku University.
Imamura warned Tuesday of the possibility of larger tsunamis after an offshore earthquake, urging coastal residents to be vigilant.
Television footage showed waves crashing into a pier on Hachijo Island, but no large swell was seen.
Residents in Hachijo said they did not feel the quake and only heard a tsunami warning, NHK reported.
Hachijo resident Ryuji Minemoto told NHK he was on high ground overlooking the ocean but did not notice any changes in the water. “I can see some ships but they don't look like they're moving violently,” he said. Minemoto said he did not feel the earlier quake.
Tuesday's tsunami was believed to have been linked to undersea volcanic activity, Imamura said. He added that a larger tsunami could arrive much later and urged coastal residents to be careful while the warning is in effect.
No one felt the quake off the coast, and there were no reports of damage or injuries. He said the tsunami was believed to be linked to undersea volcanic activity that may have caused parts of the seabed to rise or sink.
Such movement, unlike normal earthquakes, probably does not cause tremors, Imamura told NHK.
The tremor was largely unfelt, and no injuries or damage have been reported so far.
Japan is home to about 21,500 people on the Izu Islands and another 2,500 on the Ogasawara Islands, areas known for their increased seismic activity. Located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a line of seismic faults that circle the Pacific Ocean, it is one of the world's most earthquake- and tsunami-prone countries.
Japanese shipping company Tokai Kisen has cancelled morning ferry services between Tokyo and Oshima, and between Atami and Oshima, due to a tsunami warning in the Izu Islands.
Slight sea level fluctuations are expected along the coast from Chiba to the Daito Islands area of Okinawa, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
We heard in the last few minutes that the tsunami warning for the Izu and Ogasawara Islands has been lifted.
Small tsunami waves hit the shores of remote Japanese islands on Tuesday morning. The tsunami warning was lifted three hours after the quake struck. No damage or injuries were reported.
