Published recommendations for the composition of the flu vaccine for the 2025 southern hemisphere flu season.
The World Health Organization (WHO) announced today recommendations for the viral composition of influenza vaccines for the 2025 flu season in the southern hemisphere. The announcement was made at an information session after a four-day meeting on the composition of the flu vaccine. The meeting is held twice a year, once for the southern and once for the northern hemisphere.
WHO organizes this consultation with an expert advisory group drawn from WHO Collaborating Centers and WHO Core Regulatory Laboratories to analyze influenza virus surveillance data generated by the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS). The recommendations issued are used by national vaccine regulatory agencies and pharmaceutical companies to develop, manufacture and license flu vaccines for the next flu season.
Periodic updates of the viruses contained in influenza vaccines are necessary for the vaccine to be effective due to the constantly evolving nature of influenza viruses, including those that circulate and infect humans.
WHO recommends it trivalent vaccines for use in the 2025 Southern Hemisphere influenza season contain the following:
Egg-based vaccines
- A/Victoria/4897/2022 (H1N1)pdm09-like virus;
- A/Croatia/10136RV/2023 (H3N2)-like virus; and
- virus similar to B/Austria/1359417/2021 (B/Victoria line).
Vaccines based on cell culture, recombinant proteins or nucleic acids
- A/Wisconsin/67/2022 (H1N1)pdm09-like virus;
- A/District of Columbia/27/2023 (H3N2)-like virus; and
- virus similar to B/Austria/1359417/2021 (B/Victoria line).
The recommendation for the B/Yamagata lineage component of quadrivalent influenza vaccines remains unchanged from the previous recommendations:
- virus similar to B/Phuket/3073/2013 (lineage B/Yamagata).
