A Turkish construction worker has been sentenced to 865 years in prison after the building collapsed in the earthquake

On Friday, a Turkish court sentenced 62 contractors to life imprisonment on charges of negligence in building a building that collapsed as a result of the devastating earthquake that struck southeastern Türkiye in 2023.

Contractor Hassan Bargün, already imprisoned, was sentenced to 865 years in prison for “causing death and injury with probable intent,” the state-run Anadolu news agency reported.

Bashir Ekinci, a lawyer for the victims' families, said that 34 other defendants were sentenced to 25 years in prison each.

They are accused of failing to comply with building standards in a dangerous area.

96 people were killed after the collapse of the residential building built by Alpargun Company in the southeastern province of Adana in February last year.

Two earthquakes that occurred on February 6, 2023 killed more than 60,000 people in Türkiye and neighboring Syria.

Some contractors have since been detained, but opposition parties criticize the government for failing to hold implicated government officials accountable.
