Earthquake Safety: PDX gets $3.75 million for runway | news

Oregon's U.S. Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden and Representative Earl Blumenauer announced that Portland International Airport (PDX) will receive $3.75 million to ensure its runway survives a major earthquake.

The funding is among a host of federal investments in emergency preparedness, public safety and economic development in Oregon included in the 2022 omnibus spending bill, which President Biden has now signed into law.

“We appreciate Congressman Blumenauer and Senators Merkley and Wyden for their support of our request to fund a community project to design an earthquake-resistant runway at PDX,” said Curtis Rubenhold, Executive Director of the Port of Portland. “The Port of Portland is deeply committed to supporting the needs of the state and community during crises. The resilient runway at PDX – which can withstand the effects of liquefaction – could be an essential lifeline for many Oregonians. This federal funding, along with additional state funding received, will allow In 2021, the port will continue to move this important project forward.

Merkley and Wyden's bill secured federal funding for disaster preparedness, economic development, and airport infrastructure projects throughout Oregon.
