What to Know – NBC Bay Area

People in schools and offices across the Bay Area will have the opportunity to practice their earthquake response Thursday morning as part of the “Great California ShakeOut.”

Millions of Californians are preparing to participate in the Great ShakeOut and practice what to do during an earthquake. According to Shakeout, about 10.5 million Californians have signed up to participate, with an additional 44.9 million participants worldwide.

This year's exercise marks the 35th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake. A 6.7-magnitude earthquake shook the Bay Area and Northern California on October 17, 1989, killing 63 people and injuring about 3,700.

When is the major earthquake?

The Great ShakeOut workout is scheduled for 10:17 a.m. PT on Thursday. At that time, participants will practice what to do in homes and businesses during shaking from an earthquake.

How to get alerts during workouts

Would you like to receive an instant alert during the Great ShakeOut?

The MyShake app will send a test alert to users in California, Oregon and Washington during training at 10:17 a.m. PT on Thursday. Alerts are provided in partnership with the USGS and the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services.

According to the MyShake website, the test will come in a picture and will ask users to “drop, cover and wait.” The audio will play the following message: “Testing the earthquake warning system. No action is required. This is a test.”

The test will be sent as a regular notification and not a critical alert. The test will stop if your phone is on silent or Do Not Disturb mode, according to MyShake.

MyShake is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play for Android users. For more information, visit myshake.berkeley.edu.

You've probably heard it before, “Drop, dive, and wait!” According to federal, state and local emergency management experts, these three simple steps are the easiest and quickest way to prevent injury, or even death as a result. From an earthquake.

When using a cane, experts recommend sitting on a chair, bed, or other piece of furniture if you are unable to cover yourself properly. Then get down as low as possible, cover your head and neck with your hands and hold on to the immediately available place.

For those who use a wheelchair or walker, lock the wheels and lean forward as low as possible, then cover and stabilize.

What not to do during an earthquake

The Earthquake Alliance has a list of things not to do during tremors:

Do not stand in the doorway. Doorways in most modern homes are no safer than any other part of the house, and do not protect residents from falling or flying debris. Don't run outside. Trying to run outside is dangerous as the ground moves and debris can fall all around you. Don't practice the 'Triangle of Life': The Earthquake Country Alliance (ECA), a partnership of people and organizations in California working to improve earthquake preparedness, reports that recent emails describe alternative operations besides the “drop, cover, and wait” standard recommended by experts, i.e. By standing next to the table instead of crouching under it. “The so-called ‘Triangle of Life’ and some of the other actions recommended in the email potentially threaten life, and the credibility of the source. These recommendations have been widely questioned,” ECA said.
